21 Day Stewardship Devotional Day 14
Read Deuteronomy 14:22-27
Tithing is often taught as the biblical standard for giving. That idea comes from passages like this in the Old Testament, where the Israelites were commanded to give a tenth of what they had (often the first-fruits of the harvest) as an offering to the Lord. The tithe is certainly a good standard for giving, but it is not the only standard.
In recent years there have been teachers who have argued that tithing is NOT a biblical requirement. Many of us are glad to hear it! When someone argues that tithing is not the benchmark for generosity, be sure to read to the end. For the biblical mark for generosity, the tithe is the minimum that we are to give to the Lord.
For many of us, the tithe seems like an impossible goal. So let us consider a challenge: tithe for 60 days, praying each day that God use it to grow your faith. Let’s see what God will do!
Prayer
Holy One, I know that you call me to be generous with everything: my time, my talent, and my finances. I commit myself and all I have to you. Enable me to step out in faith, trusting in your provision for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
