Who is Jesus? A Lenten Journey through John – Day 19

The Church Co   -

Read John 12:20-50
The story John is telling about Jesus takes a turn in this passage. In v. 23 Jesus says, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” Scholars tell us that this is a transition point in the book, moving from what is called “The Book of Signs” to “The Book of Glory.” Prior to this passage, John’s gospel focuses on Jesus’ ministry in the world; now it focuses on Jesus’ journey to the cross and resurrection.
One of the interesting things John tells us is that, even though Jesus has performed many signs (healings and other miracles), there are still many who do not believe. Throughout John’s gospel, it is not miracles that convert people to belief, but a deeper understanding and revelation of Jesus’ identity as the Son of God who has come to take away the sins of the world. Why do you think that the signs and miracles were less compelling than the understanding of who Jesus is?
Prayer
Gracious Lord, help me to have faith that goes beyond my ability to see signs and wonders. Reveal to me the truth about Jesus, that He is the Son of God, who loves me, and gave his life for me. Amen.
