What if… Day 15

Read Hosea 6:1-6

Throughout this devotional, a theme has emerged: faithful stewardship changes our perspective on possessions, money, and life. That is true, but it is a truth that runs in two directions. This passage from Hosea begins with an oration of judgment that contradicts self-congratulation and self-justification. At the end, Hosea’s prophecy lifts up what the Lord desires most, “For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

For Hosea, a new vision of the world begins with love and knowledge of God. Hosea is not telling the people to stop making sacrifices, but to join sacrifices with love and knowledge. Maybe Hosea is challenging us to consider why we give and make sacrifices for the Lord. Is it because we feel obligated, tradition, or is it an expression of our love and knowledge of the Lord?

As you prayerfully think about stewardship and giving for the coming year, take time each day to give thanks for God’s faithfulness and to commit all of life to Him.

Prayer

Lord, you desire people who are fully committed to you in love. Enable me to love you more, and to live out this love with deep commitment today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
