Compassion – Helping Meet the Needs of Others

The Deacons ministry at FPC Ambler is very active. Whether we collect items for a specific organization, host our Inter-Faith families in January or extend compassion to those who are in the midst of a financial struggle our deacons are meeting needs in Ambler and beyond. The compassion team receives regular requests and prays over how we can bless people in need. Here’s a story of how we were able to help someone in our community.

I hit a few snags along my way. Some were emotional and spiritual, but the hardest was financial snags.  Some of those snags were caused by my own poor decisions in the past, and some were misunderstandings.  Either way, I was in a bind and needed help.  I didn’t know where to turn or how to get help.  I was feeling hopeless and afraid that I was going to lose everything.

I had made huge strides and made great sacrifices to clean up the financial mess of my past.  I was finally feeling the progress and I wasn’t constantly worrying about finances anymore.  I thought I had taken care of everything and plans were put in place to make things right.  Then out of what seemed like nowhere, I received a notice in the mail that I needed to pay a huge bill, or I was going to lose everything.  The bill was more than my monthly income and seemed impossible to pay.  I had been making small payments on this account and thought that it was in good standing based on a conversation that I had with someone.  When I talked to someone else I found out that what I was paying wasn’t good enough and because of this misunderstanding I had this huge bill to pay.  It left me feeling sick and scared.  I turned to the only place I thought could help, my church family.

My ask of the church was only to front the money for the bill and allow me to make payments so that I could pay back all the money borrowed.  I explained my situation very honestly in a letter to the church and the bill was taken care of very quickly and without any expectations in return.  I had a need and it was met.  The need was met because of people who give extra to the church in addition to their tithe for this very reason. They give so that when there is a need it can be met without hesitation.  These people don’t know who the money goes to, or what the situation is, they just know that there are people that do know and make informed decisions about these needs.  If it wasn’t for the generosity of our church family I would be in a very different situation.  Our church family loves God and loves his people and the church is committed to taking care of the needs of our church family.  I’m forever grateful for these people, who I don’t even know, for the help I received and I’m excited to pay it forward.

Thank you for giving to our Deacons and this church. Your generosity makes a difference.
